History of World Cups

1971 Barcelona (ESP)
The inaugural Men's Hockey World Cup tournament was held at Barcelona in 1971 at Real Polo grounds. The tournament commenced on October 15 and was over on October 24. After 30 matches and beating 9 other countries, including the host, Pakistan claimed the trophy.

Runner's Up - Spain
Second Runner's Up - India

1973 Amstelveen (NED)
The second instalment of Men's Hockey World Cup was held at Netherlands in 1973 at the Wagener Stadium, Amstelveen. This is one of the few tournaments where the host country won the trophy on its own grounds after drawing 1-1 against India and then 4-2 through penalties.

Second Runner's Up - West Germany

1975 Kuala Lumpur (MAS)
The Men's Hockey World Cup of 1975 was held at Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This was the first time a Hockey World Cup was hosted at an Asian country and also the first time that India won 2-1 against Pakistan.

Second Runner's Up - West Germany

1978 Buenos Aires (ARG)
Held at Campo del Polo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Men's Hockey World Cup of 1978 was yet again dominated by Pakistan with a 3-2 win against the Netherlands.

Second Runner's Up - Australia 



1982 Bombay (IND)
Held at the BHA Stadium, Bombay, India, this is the first time the grand tournament was held in India. Pakistan grabbed the title after mercilessly beating West Germany 3-1 at the finals.

Fifth Place - India

1986 London (ENG)
The Hockey World Cup of 1986 was held at Willesden, London, England. The underdog, Australia, who has consecutively taken third place in the previous two tournaments, finally prevailed and claimed their well-deserved trophy after beating host country England 2-1.

Second Runner's Up - West Germany
Twelfth Place - India 



1990 Lahore (PAK)
Possibly one of the most exciting tournaments ever with the host country meeting rival team Netherlands yet again, but unfortunately, history did not repeat itself and Pakistan lost 3-1 to the Netherlands this time.

Second Runner's Up - Australia
Tenth Place - India

1994 Sydney (AUS)
Miraculously, the finals consisted of Netherland versus Pakistan for the thid time in the history of Hockey World Cup. Held at Homebush Stadium, Sydney, Australia, the final game was a draw of 1-1, after penalties, Pakistan claimed the trophy with 4-3 win over the Netherlands.

1998 Utrecht (NED)
The Hockey World Cup of 1998 was again held in Netherlands, at Galgenwaard Stadium, Utrecht. Team Netherlands make a mark in history by being the only country to win a tournament at its home ground not once, but twice. The first one was in 1973 at the Wagener Stadium, Amstelveen.

Ninth Place - India 



2002 Kuala Lumpur (MAS)
Amazingly, after having endured being at fouth, third and second place in the past three decades, Germany finally claimed its glory and took home the trophy of the 2002 Men's Hockey World Cup held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Second Runner's Up - Netherlands
Tenth Place - India

2006 Monchengladbach (GER)
The last Hockey World Cup was held at Mönchengladbach, Germany from September 6 to September 17, 2006. Germany won for second consecutive time after beating Australia 4-3. Germany's Ulrich Bubolz received the Best Goalkeeper trophy and his teammate Christopher Zeller received the Most Promising Player trophy.
